Joanne Mawhinney gained her dental degree from Trinity College Dublin in 2002, returning home to Northern Ireland to complete her vocational training year. This was followed by two years as a Senior House Officer in Oral Surgery in the Royal Victoria and Ulster Hospitals. She then worked as an associate in general dental practice before taking up a Staff Grade position in the Periodontal Department in the School of Dentistry.
Joanne completed specialist training in Periodontics in Trinity College Dublin in 2012 and now works in private practice. During her career she has been involved in undergraduate teaching of dental students and dental hygiene students. She currently runs a peer review group for dental hygienists and lectures on Periodontics to dentists and dental hygienists.
